RETROholic art show & Figure Drawing Event!

Food truck Friday is almost here as well as the Honey Haus "RETROholic" art show.  It's a free art event, and apparently there's a variety of trucks packed with amazing food.  I've never really gave Food Trucks a second thought until moving out here.  It's such a huge thing!

As I love cartoons forever and always, when they said the theme for the show was Retro, I remembered my darling Strawberry Shortcake growing up!   So without further ado, here's the piece I did for it...

Later in the night, I'll be a featured artist along with Girls Drawin' to sketch us some Sugar Plum Fairies over at Gallery Godo in Glendale from 10pm to 1am on Friday.  Gallery Girls puts these amazing figure drawing workshops together in a variety of fun themes!  I've always wanted to go but usually I end up working since theme park hours are crazy hours and I'm the least senior artist.  So I'm very excited to go!  Expect some figure drawrings up on the blog soon!  Find more info on this event: here.  Stop by and say hello at one of these events!

Joy Ride

I did this piece for a friend for Christmas. He's my Disneyland pal and he's always daydreaming about taking one of the trams for a joy ride. He's too shy to ever attempt this as well as Disney jail doesn't sound appealing. You have to think- if Disneyland is the happiest place on Earth.... then Disney jail has to be like the saddest place on Earth.

Here's some detail. This was done in gouache and ink.



And the rough sketch I began with. It's really dark from transferring it onto the paper.

Mermaid!

Wendy: Oh, how sweet. [Peter looks disgusted] What? Are mermaids not sweet?
Peter: They'll sweetly drown you if you get too close.

Retroactive Birthday Gift

I've been working on this painting off and on since December for a special someone's birthday in January. It's a retroactive birthday gift. I hope he likes it. I'll find out at the end of the month, probably, when I see him, hopefully.

Originally, I had scribbled the design and some concepts on a page of ruled paper during... during a rehearsal for a sketch comedy show I was working on. Then I made myself put it away so I could pay attention. A little while later, I pulled out these chicken scratches and sketched the following out...



But as I wanted to explore some options, I decided to redraw it into the following:



Eyes closed or eyes open? I really liked the flow and feel of the first one, although I enjoyed the flirtation in the second. Ultimately, I decided to go with eyes shut because I felt it was more dreamy and this sums up one of his dreams that I promised him I would never disclose the name of but it has to deal with opening a restaurant and cooking black beans in a lot of dishes. Seriously, Yum!

So, I then painted this 20x14 w pastels.
